Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.
My name is Troy Cummings. I’m an illustrator who does mostly editorial stuff, and a good deal of kids/educational illustration. I’m also a writer—I’ve written/illustrated a picture book called The Eensy Weensy Spider Freaks Out!.
I live and work in Greencastle, Indiana, USA. If you don’t know where that is, it’s about 10 miles north of Cloverdale.
What are you working on?
I’m writing/illustrating a series of kids books about monsters. I’m also illustrating a couple of jigsaw puzzles and an iPad pop-up book.
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
One of my favorites is the box art for a card game called “Let’s Take a Hike”. It combines all of my favorite things: a dopey bear, a guy with both eyes on the same side of his head, and a skunk. The whole project was pretty fun; I hope to do more card or board games soon.
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot(s)? (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch, etc.)
I always start with pencil sketches. I scan these into illustrator to block out shapes and colors. Then I bring those shapes into photoshop, where I paint textures and details with my digital tablet. I recently upgraded to a Cintiq which pretty much rules.

Like everyone else on Dribble, I’m a big fan of Anna Hurley. Look at these drums! Her lines, shapes and colors are the best. Cool and funny at the same time.
