Dribbble Gallery: National Poster Retrospecticus

Dribbble is teaming up with the National Poster Retrospecticus for a new kind of Meetup: You attend an NPR show, you enjoy the art, and you meet Dribbblers and other cool poster fans. The first event takes place in Boston next Friday. To kick off the partnership, we’re presenting our first-ever gallery show, featuring work by Dribbble designers who have contributed to the NPR. National Poster Retrospecticus Returns to Boston

A massive collection of hand-printed gig-posters is coming home to Boston! The National Poster Retrospecticus is a traveling show of more than 300 hand-printed event posters from over 100 of the most prominent poster designers in the USA — many of whom are frequent contributors to Dribbble!

After months of meticulous planning and curation this national summer tour kicks off on August 1 in Boston and will visit three other cities (see below), including a stop at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland!

“We’ve loaded up the van with a backstock of thousands of posters. We’re making overnight drives to each city and setting up the shows for one night only.” says John Boilard, producer of the tour. “We’re stoked to follow up the success of our recent spring tour. We hope to make this another season of adventure, hard work and fun. It’s rad that we get to team up with Boston University at home in Boston!

"We’re also excited to team up with Dribbble this summer. We’re both motivated by helping facilitate a dialogue in the design world—both online and offline. It feels like a perfect fit! Bostonians should also anticipate special guests The Danger Booth and Keytar Bear at this one-night-only event!” he concludes.

About The NPR

The National Poster Retrospecticus is a traveling show of more than 300 hand-printed event posters from over 100 of the most prominent poster designers in the USA. While some form of The NPR goes back as far as 2006, the current format took shape in the spring of 2012. Our mission is to celebrate posters and the made-by-hand aesthetic, and spread that enthusiasm around the world. We wanna travel everywhere! The NPR is produced by JP Boneyard, a poster designer and enthusiast who has been setting up art and music events since 1998.

THE SHOW

Brad Woodard, Dino Alphabet Prints Brad’s passion for creating has led him to jobs with small startups and large advertising agencies. As a result, he now lives in Austin, Texas running a design and illustration studio with his wife called Brave the Woods. Outside of work he loves to spend time outdoors and traveling with his wife, little boy, and puppy.
Javier Garcia, Artcrank San Francisco Poster Javier Garcia is a designer and illustrator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is known as an archivist of vintage modernist books and ephemera which influences his work. Javier works on the premise of design that is honest, tactile and conceptual.
Lydia Nichols, dachsund Lydia Nichols is an East Coast-based illustrator, designer, and anthropomorphizer. When not cheerfully drawing faces on people and inanimate objects alike, she enjoys a good book and a hot cup of tea.
Scott Campbell, AB in DC Scott Campbell is a designer, illustrator, and printmaker currently working and living in New Orleans, Louisiana. After studying printmaking and graphic design at Louisiana State University, he taught himself how to screen print and began working on print projects within the music and entertainment industry. He is passionate about patterns, grids, textures, bold colors, and analog synthesizers.
Doublenaut, TI Brothers Andrew and Matt McCracken began working under the name Doublenaut in 2004. The Toronto, Ontario-based studio specializes in screen printed posters and all forms of print design. Heavily influenced by mid-century modern design, their work features simple illustration, bold color schemes, and strong typography.
Eric R. Mortensen, Tuneyards Eric R. Mortensen is a freelance designer and illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York. He got his start in design in high school, making posters and album art for his brother’s band. Most recently Eric has worked for a diverse range of clients, from NASA to Nickelodeon.
DKNG, Fun’s Seattle Ice Cream Truck Dan Kuhlken and Nathan Goldman were both drawn to music, film and design at an early age, but didn’t combine their talents until 2005 when the duo founded a design studio with the goal of fusing these creative avenues. The pair has found a niche in linking a personal and unique aesthetic to the world’s most talented and iconic musical artists, brands, and businesses.
Valerie Jar, boikzmoind Hello! I’m a freelance designer/illustrator located in Salt Lake City. I’m inspired by art deco, vintage signs, hand-lettering, tattoo art and people. I love the hidden symbolism and meanings behind common objects and everyday things, and oftentimes, that fascination will play a role in my design and illustration.
Tad Carpenter, King poster Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, designer, illustrator and teacher Tad Carpenter loves the Midwest and how it has shaped the way he makes and thinks. Tad has been lucky to work with the great people at Target, Macy’s, Old Navy, Chronicle Books, Conan O’Brien, Adobe, Nick Jr, Rayban and MTV to name a few.
The Bubble Process, Neilyoung The Bubble Process is a tag-team, cross-country duo that dabbles in design and illustration. They work together long-distance on everything they do. They enjoy great beer, fine pizza and decent jams.
Ellis Latham-Brown, Passion Pit Ellis is a self-trained designer and illustrator who prides himself on his ability tell a story through design in a direct and lighthearted fashion. He believes that the most effective design stems from a simple idea, a pinch of color voodoo, and most importantly, a strong sense of craftsmanship.
Matt Stevens, The Exploded Alphabet/B Matt Stevens is a designer, illustrator, speaker and creative tinkerer from North Carolina. His focus is brand identity programs and illustration. Matt’s goal is always to do thoughtful and unforgettable work for amazing brands and make the whole process a pleasure.
Jake Dugard, Student Show Poster (artsy-angled photo) Jake Dugard is a designer, silkscreen and letterpress printer and a craftsman. He is the co-founder of Makers Union, has interned at the historic Hatch Show Print, and currently lives and recently graduated with his MFA from Louisiana Tech University. He is currently living and working in Ruston, Louisiana.
Chris DeLorenzo, Darth Poster Chris DeLorenzo is a graphic artist and illustrator working out of Boston, Massachusetts. By day he is the lead designer for Johnny Cupcakes, and by night he lends his hand and ideas illustrating for global brands of all kinds. He has the pleasure of doing work for Jameson, Lincoln Motor Company, Espolon Tequila, Sony and more.
Doe Eyed, Deer Fight Eric is a born and bred Midwesterner. He paid his dues in the advertising industry before leaving to start his own business, Doe Eyed, a multi-faceted company that splits its time between graphic design, illustration and drawing wieners on things. His fame as a pizza enthusiast is quickly becoming the stuff of legend.
James Weinberg, Spring Skull James Weinberg is an illustrator, designer and printer based out of Somerville Massachusetts. His work has appeared on a variety of posters and bookcovers. He is inspired by folk art, mid-century design and natural history.
JP Boneyard, National Poster Retrospecticus Poster (blink) John Boilard is a Massachusetts native who designs, does front-end development, produces art and music events and screen prints under the name JP Boneyard. John loves the need for creative problem solving that comes along with everything from coding a website to setting up a cross-country art tour to printing a poster. This guy likes fun.
Kevin Mercer, Retrospecticus Kevin Mercer is a designer-illustrator working in the Philadelphia area. He has been designing and printing posters for over a decade for a variety of bands large and small. His work embraces the vivid, tactile feel of the screen printing process, layering shape and drawing-based elements with hand drawn type, collage and digital elements.
Steady Co., Satan’s Finest Steady Co. is a hard-working design, illustration and for-hire screen printing shop in the industrial badlands of Northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. “The sole mission of Steady Co. is to work hard for good people and create things at the absolute height of our ability - no exceptions, no bullshit.”
Brad Vetter, Charles Bradley Brad Vetter is a designer, letterpress printer and occasional maker of great things. After an eight-year tenure at the legendary Hatch Show Print, Brad is making a name for himself in the Midwest. While Hatch played in integral part in his aesthetics and process, he explores new techniques and ideas to push what letterpress means in the 21st century.
Brian Butler, Brian1986 Kobra Brian Butler considers the concert his workplace. To him, the venue is an improvised studio, a place full of unpredictable muses, capable spilling beer, randomly vomiting, or stage diving directly into you. His work appears on the flyers gracing the walls of the venues that he can be found inside doodling. His concert drawings can be found at showdrawn.com.
Two Arms Inc., Just Landed We are a Brooklyn-based design and illustration team. As husband and wife small business owners, we pride ourselves on our strong work ethic and quick turnaround. We believe in craftsmanship, attention to detail, and that sweet spot between concept and execution. Our best work is the result of a collaborative effort between our clients and our own unique vision.
Laura Baisden, Camp Nevernice Laura Baisden works at Hatch Show print designing and printing letterpress posters all day every day. By night, she carves animals and other things from her imagination.
John Knoerl, NPR - St. Louis John, AKA Nerl Says Design, is a designer and screen-printer living in the city of Detroit. Turning his passion for art and music into one, he’s been able to create limited edition posters for many acts all over the country. With a geometric and collage style, he utilizes typography and a minimum amount of colors in a majority of his prints.
Shed Labs, mewithoutYou Print Shed Labs is a design and illustration studio hailing from Greenville, South Carolina. They believe the idea is first and craftsmanship is vital. That’s why they look at each project as an opportunity to get their hands dirty. Whether they are printing a poster for their favorite band or rebranding a local restaurant Shed Labs is digging in and working hard.
Mikey Burton, AC Newman An Ohio native, Mikey Burton proudly describes his design aesthetic as “Midwesterny” and draws much of his inspiration from artifacts found throughout the hardworking, blue-collar Rust Belt: old type-specimen sheets, arcane equipment manuals and ancient textbooks. He is now a freelancer in sunny Philadelphia where he designs and illustrates for such clients as The Atlantic, Bloomberg Businessweek, Converse, and you.
